1.5
Diversity of Brain Disease and Disorders
There are a wide range of conditions that affect the normal activities of the
brain. These include but are not limited to neurodegenerative, mental diseases
and tumors (Figure 1.3). It should be acknowledged that the complexity of
the brain limits treatment strategies and diagnosis of associated diseases. Es-
pecially the nature of the blood-brain barrier is an obstacle to drug delivery
to CNS [30].

Neurodegenerative Diseases
Neurodegenerative diseases are multifactorial diseases that negatively affect
patient life quality and progress rapidly and are characterized by structural
and functional degeneration and/or death of nerve cells. In neurodegenerative
